Basa Fillet with black beans, ginger and spring onions

This is such an underrated fish but it is reasonable in price, has a great texture and is really tasty. Cooked this way it’s light and healthy and makes a great breakfast (if you are weird like me), light lunch or light dinner. Quick and simple to do. If you are a fish lover this one’s a winner.


1 to 2 Basa fillets
a few slices of fresh ginger
few slice of lemon

1 tablespoon of Fermented Chinese black beans (optional)

3 spring onions sliced thinly
splash of rice wine
a few drops of sesame oil
a splash of soy sauce or gluten-free tamari
White pepper
fresh coriander leaves to serve (optional)


Put water in the steamer as per normal

Place a layer of ginger in the steamer
Place fish on top
Place the lemon slices on top

Crush the beans slightly and scatter on top of the fish

Steam In microwave for about 4 minutes depending on thickness of fish. (If steaming on the hob it may take longer)
Remove from steamer
Add the sauces and white pepper to taste
it’s nice served with a few stirfry vegetables seasoned with the same sauce
